The Flower Child Poetry by Josephine Kennedy (Book Review)

Happy release day to Josephine Kennedy and The Flower Child Poetry! Available NOW on Amazon.

"The Flower Child is a collection of poems about a girl who went through one of the darkest times of her life ... Through this book, Kennedy shares some of the darkest, saddest, hardest moments she experienced. With the hope it will inspire those who are feeling the same thing to break free from the chains that are holding them down. To heal their hurting heart. And ultimately, telling the story of how she healed her heart. By taking her wilted flowers and growing new. Welcoming home, the flower child."

As a writer and also as someone who spent four years studying and interpreting literature in order to obtain a bachelor's degree, I can truly appreciate the art of poetry. Although I enjoy a great many creative outlets, poetry-writing was never my strong suit nor one of my highest graded projects in my creative writing courses. Therefore, when I happen across poems or poetry that put feelings into words in such an artful but authentic way, I am always impressed. The Flower Child Poetry is a strong debut for Josephine Kennedy.

The Flower Child Poetry can be a quick read, but it doesn't have to be. This is the kind of book that you could leave on your coffee table and pick up whenever you happen upon the time, read a little bit, and come back to again later. Or, if you're like me, you can fly through it in one sitting, but return to multiple times. It still feels fresh each time you re-read it. I was personally struck by how poignantly this book portrays the coming of age experience. Josephine describes going through dark times, dealing with heartbreak, and discovering and re-discovering one's identity, all while conveying feelings of lightness and hope. While I think everyone will be able to relate to this book if they've ever been a teenager, I would especially recommend this poetry collection to teens and young adults. The bits of sage wisdom about life, love, and our spiritual journeys contained in this little green book could prove to be invaluable inspiration for any girl (or guy) just trying to figure "it" out. The Flower Child is also a reminder that no matter how bad things get, we can always keep growing.

Psssst... You might remember Josephine Kennedy from a podcast appearance I made last year! In early 2021, Josephine interviewed me for the Choose Grace Podcast and asked me questions about my anxiety, struggles with self-doubt, and my journey as a writer, but also as a human and child of God! It was a really enjoyable experience and I highly recommend giving that episode a listen. If you enjoy it, I think you'll probably also enjoy The Flower Child!
