“Muttering filled the boat. His friends reveled in awe of this moment. They had shared in another miracle of Jesus. But this time, they certainly shared the same question. Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him.” — Barbara M. Britton in Across the Lake: Traveling with Jesus Around the Sea of Galilee
It is officially release day for Across the Lake! Congratulations to Barbara M. Britton on yet another book release. I have for a long time been a fan of Barbara’s books ever since I first read Lioness (her take on the Daughters of Zelophehad), and when I found out that she was combining short stories inspired by her own travels and Bible study, I couldn’t wait to read it! When she asked me if I’d like to read an early copy for review, I didn’t even have to think about my response.

Barbara M. Britton’s writing in Across the Lake brings to life brings to life stories from the Gospel of Mark—both those that I’ve heard taught often, and those I’ve not reflected on enough. Through vivid description and natural dialogue, each short story transports you to the Sea of Galilee as though you were really there with the disciples and first believers. Barbara’s personal reflections based on her observations in her travels also give wonderful context for those of us who have not made that journey except in fiction. Truly a beautiful work!
The book itself is divided into six parts, each focusing on a different passage of Mark. They begin with a short story illuminating that passage (not adding to it; Barbara’s writing is very faithful to the Bible accounts, as always). Next are the “Author Reflections,” where Barbara shares memories of her travels, research, how it applies to the story, and how we can apply the story today. Finally, there are discussion questions that will really make you think deeper, challenge you, and in some ways prompt you to take action. This is very easy to read quickly, or go at your own pace for deeper study. It can also be read as a group or individually. I would of course recommend this to readers and fans of Biblical/Christian fiction, as I know so many people are looking for a new devotional or study to stat off 2026. I also think it would be a great resource for Sunday School classes or church small groups/discipleship groups.
Thank you to Barbara for allowing me to read her work ahead of its release, again. What an honor and a privilege!
*I received an advance copy of this book, but all opinions are my own.
